Our 3s program offers a vehicle for children's collective inspiration, supports them developmentally, and assists them in transitioning to the School environment.

We begin the year by listening for cues from the children that they are ready to be on their own among teachers and peers in the classroom setting. As children are readied for this transition, we assist parents in their own process first by allowing space for the children to connect with teachers, peers and the environment, then by moving outside of the classroom to connect with other parents participating in the same process. Teachers, the program director, and a child development consultant sensitively orchestrate this gradual process with children and parents. With great care and individual attention, the 3s class becomes a full drop-off program.

After this transition, partnerships between the School and families continue to be an integral part of Blue School's learning environment. Parents are encouraged to participate in the classroom by serving as guest artists/contributors, or helping with classroom activities such as book reading, cooking or playground trips. We honor parents' unique role and believe that their connection to the program enriches it significantly.

Our 3s program meets three days per week. The day begins with a "soft entry", an opportunity for children to transition gently from the outside world to the classroom environment. Quiet book or table time leads into gross motor activity before gathering for circle time. At circle time, the children and teachers discuss the current thread of inquiry, share personal stories and overview the day's activities.

The class engages in a free exploration time, during which children can choose from several activities, working in small groups. As children become more comfortable, we build in opportunities to interact in mixed-age groups. This transition respects friendships and connections across ages as well as the unique rate at which children develop.

The wide selection of activities encourages children to make choices independently and develop areas of interests. Children have opportunities to work in the classroom, the art studio, and the physically engaging Wonder Room. We also pay weekly visits to the park. They may play with blocks or other building materials, create visual or performance art, dictate stories or participate in dramatic play, puppetry or investigative science projects.

Yoga, music, and puppet specialists incorporate the children's learning through those varying media as well.

EXTENDED DAY

Extended day operates within our educational program as a way to support students who are ready to explore their interests as they evolve in a longer school day, which consists of 90 min of additional class time.  The extension of our standard program offers children the opportunity to lunch as a mixed-age group, rest and then re-engage the lines of inquiry they are following during regular class time for an extended period in the afternoon.  This option enhances our program by facilitating continued exploration and socialization for students.
